How do Economist Education’s self-paced, online courses work?

Our programmes fit flexibly around executives’ busy schedules, enabling you to hone your skills in a practical, efficient way

March 27th 2025

How do your online courses work?

Our online courses, which have set start dates, run multiple times a year. They are designed to allow participants to explore material at the times that suit them. Self-paced modules are released on an online campus each Wednesday, and participants notified by email. They then have a week to work through the module’s content, which can include written notes, videos and podcasts, as well as polls, quizzes and other exercises. Whether learners are enrolled on a two- or six-week course, each module helps them develop a new skillset and become more effective at work.

Who will I learn from?

Our courses are crafted by editors and journalists at The Economist alongside invited specialists, with guest speakers ranging from former prime ministers to Nobel-prizewinning economists. You will be guided through the programme by a team of experienced tutors, who will answer subject-specific questions and facilitate group discussions on interactive forums. They may also recommend further reading, including from The Economist (a complimentary three-month digital subscription is given to all participants). For technical questions, a success team is available round the clock.

Will I be assessed?

Each week participants apply what they have learned and submit work for grading. Assignments range from creating compelling charts (Data storytelling and visualisation) to reflecting on the impact of geopolitics on their business (International relations). Experienced assessors provide personalised feedback on learners’ submissions. An overall grade of 50% or higher enables successful completion, while 75% or higher unlocks a distinction. In both cases, participants receive a digital certificate to share on LinkedIn and other networking sites.

How do I enrol?

Our course pages, accessible from the homepage, show the next available start date for each programme. You can enrol on the upcoming run of a course, or keep an eye on our website for details of future course presentations. Send us an email at info@education.economist.com if you have any questions. Other formats are available to corporate clients; read about them here or visit our enterprise page
