Choose from three formats to improve your team’s business-writing skills
Our professional-communication course is available as a self-paced, online programme and as a virtual or in-person masterclass
Economist Education’s business-writing course is our most popular programme. It teaches professionals to write with purpose and precision, helping them work out what they want to say and giving them the ability to say it. The course avoids abstract rules in favour of practical tools for effective communication at work.

To make the course as accessible as possible, we offer it in three formats, so busy professionals can learn in a way that suits them. Find out more about each format below and decide which is right for your team.
Our self-paced, online course: the original version of our writing programme is usually delivered over six weeks, with one week for each course module, allowing participants to balance learning with other commitments. Activities and assignments help them put the principles of good writing into practice. Experienced tutors provide guidance and encourage collaboration in discussion forums. This remote option is perfect for global teams. Participants can join a scheduled run of the course and network with people from other organisations; large groups can request a private run, with pacing tailored to their needs.
Our virtual masterclass: for remote teams who want a live, customised experience, our online masterclass on writing effectively for business is ideal. Over four half-days, an experienced editorial trainer teaches the principles of writing embodied by The Economist. Presentations are combined with individual and group exercises: learners join breakout discussions, vote in polls and quiz their instructor in real time, while providing constructive feedback on one another’s work throughout the sessions. This interactive option is suitable for teams of 15-40 people.
Our in-person masterclass: this option is for teams that want to learn intensively in a setting that encourages team-building. The workshop, like its virtual counterpart, is led by a professional writer and educator. Sessions take place over two days at a location of your choice. Learners receive personalised, face-to-face feedback from our trainer and from one another, working together to master the principles of good business writing. Consider this option for your company’s off-site sessions or as part of a wider learning-and-development programme. It is appropriate for groups of 15-25 people.
Whichever format you choose, participants will work on a writing project that is relevant to their business context, and receive a grade and written feedback. Further customisation of each format is available, whether by incorporating industry-specific case studies or matching deadlines to the rhythm of your team’s work. Groups can request team learning guides containing activities that build on the course content. Everyone who completes the programme will receive a certificate and takeaway materials to help them keep improving as a writer.
